About the course

Enjoy the simple pleasure of sketching

Whether you’re picking up a pencil for the first time or you’re a professional looking to rediscover the built world with fresh eyes, this 6-week course is a creative, hands-on way to engage with architecture, streetscapes, and public space.

Led by experienced artist and tutor Andy Gray, Urban Sketching focuses on capturing the world around you using nothing more than a pencil and your own perspective. From streetscapes and shopfronts, to urban moments often overlooked, you’ll develop your observational skills and confidence in a supportive environment.

Join us from Mon 2 June, and discover how to slow down, look closer, and see your city in a whole new way – one line at a time.

Using an accessible, classroom based approach and working solely in pencil, you’ll return to the fundamentals and learn to capture places around you effectively.

COURSE SUMMARY

• When? – Monday evenings (Mon 2 June – Mon 7 July) to fit easily around a busy workweek
• Where? – Design West on the city’s historic waterfront
• Who?– taught by celebrated artist & teacher Andy Gray
• Suitable for? – open to both newcomers and those returning to sketching

The course will be taught by Andy Gray. An established artist and enthusiastic course leader, Andy has many years teaching experience and specialises in observational drawing and painting. You can usually find him and his sketchbook out and about on the streets of Bristol.

• The Assembly at Design West, 16 Narrow Quay, BS1 4QA
• The Assembly is on the first floor and is fully accessible via a lift in The Architect.

Course Materials

Students must bring with them:

• A good quality A3 white cartridge paper sketchbook (approx 220gsm) 
• HB 2b and 4B artists drawing pencils
• Pencil Sharpener and eraser
