Ernö Goldfinger (1902-87) is one of the most celebrated modern architects to work in Britain in the twentieth century. Known for his bold uncompromising style, Goldfinger left an indelible mark on our city skylines, from his modernist interpretations of terraced homes to iconic London towers.

50 years on join us for the launch of a new book celebrating the life and legacy of Erno Goldfinger,

Author Alan Powers will guide us through Goldfinger’s pioneering projects, exploring the vision behind his most iconic buildings, such as Trellick Tower and Balfron Tower. Powers will unravel the controversies and triumphs that defined Goldfinger’s career, shedding light on the architect’s unique approach to form, space and social responsibility.

The impressive spaces & finishes that Goldfinger brought to council housing, were not just about doing a job well, but about giving council tenants buildings of the highest standard. (Owen Hatherley, Dezeen)

Born in Hungary and trained in Paris, Goldfinger dedicated most of his life and career to his adopted home of England. Bringing a European sophistication to his adopted culture, Goldfinger was respected by his fellow architects, but remained an outsider in English Modernism.

Whether you’re a design enthusiast, a student of architecture, or simply curious about the forces that shape our urban environments, this talk offers a new window into Goldfinger’s enduring legacy.

About the Speakers

Alan Powers (Architectural Historian and Author). Alan grew up close to Ernö Goldfinger’s house in Hampstead. His architect father dissuaded him from following the profession, and he became instead an artist-printmaker, exhibition organiser, magazine journalist, university lecturer and writer of books.

In his long involvement with the Twentieth Century Society, Alan is co-editor of the series Twentieth Century Architects, including the recently published book on Goldfinger co-authored with the late Elain Harwood. Alan is also a Professor of Architecture and Design History at London School of Architecture.

Elain Harwood. At Design West we’d like to acknowledge the pioneering work of the co-author of the book featured in this talk. Elain was a celebrated architectural historian and a remarkable woman. Elain sadly passed away in 2023, but will be with us in spirit. ‘The values of the welfare state formed me and I grew up believing that they would last forever.’ Elain Harwood (1958 – 2023).
