Climate Change and a Global Energy Crisis loom large on the horizon. Aside from short term financial fixes how do we become more resilient? The UK has the oldest coldest buildings in Europe and 80% of us will be living in these while we try to meet our climate commitments in 2030.

We ask leading experts in retrofit and building physics to show us how it can (and must) be done.

Dr. Natasha Watson

After completing her doctorate in low impact building materials in 2016, Natasha has become one of the experts leading the development of knowledge on embodied carbon.  She is the UK Embodied Carbon Lead for Structures, where she advises and consults on embodied carbon measurement and reduction, and builds on Buro Happold’s own commitments to reducing embodied carbon as a company.  A key part of her advice centres on embracing the retrofitting of existing buildings.  She is also interested in wider Climate Emergency issues around equity and unconscious bias in the built environment, as well as intersectional environmentalism.

Robert Prewett, Prewett Bizley

Bob entered the field of deep retrofit when he was invited to carry out an ‘extreme low energy’ refurbishment in 2008. That project was something of an awakening as he realised it was the existing stock where the carbon challenge really lay. In 2010 he coined the term Retrofit Coordinator which was subsequently developed by The Retrofit Academy  into the qualification of the same name that now underpins PAS 2035. Since then he has been part of various teams creating guides such as Bristolian’s SWI (2015), the London Retrofit Action Plan (2021) and more recently an energy efficiency guide within a new Conservation Guide for Ramsgate (2021). He continues to deliver low energy retrofit projects that aim to shed new light on the subject.

Ian Preston – Director of Household Energy Services, CSE

As Director of Household Energy Services Ian oversees award winning advice projects. His previous role as Senior Analyst covered research into fuel poverty, consumer behaviour, hard-to-treat housing issues and scheme evaluation. Ian’s particular skills include energy modelling, data collection, analysis and survey work.

Ian has considerable knowledge of energy policy, from legislative framework to practical on-the-ground delivery. He also has considerable expertise in energy and consumer behaviour. Prior to joining CSE Ian was based at the University of Birmingham Department of Public Health & Epidemiology as a researcher.
